A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin has shot to prominence thanks to the HBO TV series of the same name. The series follows the books quite closely, but reading or watching, it can be very difficult to understand the relationships between characters, the layout of the world, and even remembering the characters themselves. Fortunately, an app has been created that will help all Game of Thrones fans understand, and increase their knowledge of the World of Ice and Fire.
This app is available for both iPhone and Android devices alike. The app is free to try, it provides the main engine, and gives brief information on characters and locations in the first book, but then an add on for each book must be purchased in order to get the full experience. These add ons can even be purchased all in one saving you a couple of pounds or so.
Once you have downloaded and installed them (beware, it does take up a lot of space in comparison to most other apps), you will be presented with the home page. At the top, you have a search bar, research any character or location, and it will be brought up, in great detail.
At the bottom, you have your main menu system. The first button should be you first port of call, ‘Books Read.’ Here you can slide the bar along to where you are in the series. It is a form of spoiler control so you don’t inadvertently read something you shouldn’t yet. Once you’ve established your location in the series, then you can safely navigate the rest of the app and get the info you need.
The next buttons are pretty self explanatory; you have People, Houses, Places, and Maps. Each will present you with a scrollable list in alphabetical order so it is easy to find what you are after.
The Maps link is the most fun though. Select the region you wish to explore, and then you can use the gestures to scroll in, or move around, getting to know the entire world. It is a great way to gain an overview of where all the major cities and locations are before you even start reading the books or watching the show.
When viewing the maps, you’ll see swords sticking out at various points. Click on these, and you’ll be presented with a drop down menu of the locations there. Again, click, and you’ll be taken to the info page of that particular location.
Every Game of Thrones fans needs to have this app, as it provides a fantastic background of information for the user, and brings a splendid visual into this fantasy world.
